3. The Local Studies Group of the Association of Hungarian Librarians (HKSZ). - 3.8. International co-operation: the Hungarian Local Studies Group and the UK Local Studies Group.
The UK Local Studies Group Committee had already approved an independent International Policy in 1993 and the Letter of Accord with the Hungarian colleagues was an excellent extension of this programme. The link between the two Groups was established. The HKSZ decided to invite a representative of the UK Local Studies Group for a week's study tour around the date of the HKSZ Annual Conference in 1995. It was agreed that Gyula Mándli, the chairman of the Group, along with György Gerber and Tibor Sándor would organise the accommodation and any library visits in Budapest, and would also welcome the British guest at Ferihegy Airport. The study tour always continues at the Conference venue with activities arranged by the Conference host with the interests of the individual guest in mind. While Márta Orbán provides the technical backup, Erzsébet Gáncs agreed to deal with all the correspondence and the considerable duties of a translator, both of the written and spoken papers and socially during the Conference. More recently other members of the Group have been able to assist with these translation assignments. Many articles have been written by those taking part in these collaborative study tours (see Bibliography), so the following is a brief summary only. The Letter of Accord between the HKSZ and the Local Studies Group of the UK Library Association The two Groups agreed the six-point Letter of Accord 1995 - 1998, to be reviewed at the end of the three years. In fact the HKSZ committee considers this Accord each year. * There should be a minimum of two international exchanges each way every three years so that the nominees of both Groups could benefit from each other's experience and friendship. In-country expenses of each representative should be the responsibility of the host Group. * The UK Local Studies Group should send six copies of their twiceyearly journal Local Studies Librarian to the Hungarian Group * The UK Local Studies Group should also send local studies guides, hand-outs, small publications to the HKSZ library at Vác * Copyright permissions would be obtained by the UK Group so that any useful material, such as the booklet Local Studies Libraries: Library Association guidelines for local studies provision in public libraries 1990, could be translated and disseminated in Hungary * A network of British local studies librarians was to be encouraged to correspond with their Hungarian colleagues 74
