The theme of this Conference, the national minorities in Hungary, their culture and history, was again appropriate to the conference venue of Gyula as this town is one of the centres for the national minorities in Hungary. The first speaker, Zoltán Tóth, from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage (NKÖM), gave an overview of the political and cultural rights and potential of the national minorities in Hungary. This lecture was followed by further papers on the Slovakian, German and Croatian national minorities, given by Carol Wlachovsky, Agnes Szauer and Márton Ispánovity. On the second day György Petrusán, Mária Mukics, Erzsébet Nemes and Kornél Novacsek Vojnics gave papers dealing with the cultural prospects of Romanian, Slovenian, Serbian and Armenian national minorities. The final lecturer was Győző Cholnoky who spoke about the scientific research being conducted within the ethnic minorities. The third day was assigned to Eduárdné Elekes and Zsuzsanna Lukács, who defined the services of the county libraries for the national minorities, the compilation of bibliographies and databases on their behalf. The study tour took the delegates to Békéscsaba and Gyomaendrőd. As in previous years there was a local exhibition, on this occasion of the work of Julianna Diósi, who is not only a librarian but also a well-known baker of honey-cakes.
