László Rom- hányi the theatre manager and its secretary Tamás Kis, who was seriously beaten up by the police on November 7th, have now issued another dramatic appeal to the friends of the Jurta Theatre requesting aid. The appeal is as follows: Fkáendsl 300 forints is nőt a great deal, if you could donate 300 Ft to the Jurta Theatre and if ve can find 50 thousand others like you in Hungary the Jurta Theatre vili be saved. It is increasingly obvious to all Hungárián citizens that the lofty slogans of the reform policy are nőt folloved up by serious radical changes. The standard of liv- ing is decreasing rapidly and the country faces a serious crisis. We have no con- stitution, ve have no coat of arms and in regard to the Bos-Nagymaros dam ve have no Parliament. The authorities cannot or vili nőt solve the problems facing Hungar- ians living abroad. In Gzechoslovakia sixty indigenous Hungárián villages in Csallóköz are being evacuated because the flood created by the dam vili destroy the houses. The Jurta Theatre vas built to enable free, honest and fearless discussion about the problems facing Hungary. It is alloved no credit, its ventures are hemmed in on all sides and its only chance of survival is if it pays its debt by December 31st. In November alone the National Scout Meeting, the IDA Congress, the Netvork fór Free Initiatives meeting, the All Saints Commemoration, economic policy debates and lec- tures about the state security agencies and about Kistarcsa vere held in the theatre. It is of national importance that the Jurta Theatre is saved. By donating 300 Ft the Jurta Theatre avoids liquidation, an obvious cultural policy ploy by the authorities. 0f course the theatre is nőt perfect and criticisms can be raised bút the fact that it has played a vitai historical role this year is indisputable. We ask you to shov this appeal to your friends, aquaintances and relations. The press hacks vrite that it is a centre fór opposition. Yes ve are against everything vhich is hostile to the nation and the people. We vish fór an independent, democratic Hungary. Budapest, November, 1988.
