Initlative to Establish an Independent Workers Party. This aftemoon the Independent Small-Holders Party formed a local branch in Szentendre. The founding meeting, to which representatives of the Party*s other branches alsó came, was held in Pál Dragon*s fiat, the secretary of Szentendre*s Petőfi Cultural and Traditionalist Union. The 25 participants in the meeting issued the following announcement: "On November 12th 1988 the Szentendre branch of the Independent Small- Holders, Agricultural Workers and Civil Party was formed on a legal and historical continuity basis. Its aim is to ease the country out of its pre- sent serious situation by establishing a national consensus with a genuine Hungárián historical compromise. It intends to represent the interests of the small-scale entrepreneurs and producers in the town and of those people who wish fór democratic development in society and fór greater emphasis on ownership. It is well known that the Independent Small-Holders Party gained 57% of the votes in the November 194-5 elections bút that it was gradieHy silenced thereafter. It re-formed on October 31st 1956 bút after the suppression of the revolution its operation was once again prevented. The founders of the Szentendre branch told the Hungárián October Information Service on the phone that they wished to indicate by the expression "legal continuity" that the Small-Holders Party has never actually been banned. The Workers Group of the Young Democrats Alliance recently issued an announce­ment in which they declare their intention, along with representatives of five other groupings to establish an independent workers party. According to the an— nouncement the aim of the party would be "A non-violent democratic transformation which is based on reforms which express the will of the people" and "the rein- statement of the honour of the worker and of work". They want to hold a workers conference in the near future in order to prepare fór the party’ s formation.
