WC1A 2HN * Tel. 01-430 2126 (írom abroad 441-430 2126) 277/1988 (E) 4-th November, 1988 Colleetive Hunger Strlke in Budapest in Protest at the Construction of the Dam The Hungárián environmentalists’ Group Demanding Referendum which protests against the construction of the Bos-Nagymaros dam continues the street signature collection which they began on Monday fór a letter addressed to the Presidential Council of the Hungárián Republic in which they demand a referendum and that construction be suspended. On Monday the police tried to prevent this collection on Marx Square, on Tuesday and Wednesday on Felszabaaulas Square and yesterday on Deák Square, they violently inter- vened and confiscated the list of subscriptions and their bili board. According to the reports a great number of passers-by on discovering that the action was nőt fór bút against the dam signed the protest. By yesterday evening nearly 4-000 signatures had been collected on the streets and in subways, this brings the totál of signatures collected to about ten thousand. In spite of the increasing protest Karoly Grósz declared today in Vienna that the investment will continue despite the actions by environmentalists. Yesterday on Hungárián Rádió Miklós Szántó the manager of the Water Supply Investment'Company said that the construction of the dam will be speeded up. Today at 6 pm 29 people began a 4-8 hour colleetive hunger strike in protest at the Bos-Nagymaros investment in the Jurta Theatre. They issued a declaration in which they drew attention to the tragic consequences of the Parliamentary decision and demanded a referendum and the suspension of construction. Those participating in- cluded an equal number of well-known figures in the Hungárián environmentalist move- ment and their supporters, young and old, mén and women. Today the Theatre's tele­phoné did nőt operate fór two hours and police cars surrounded the building.
