WC1A 2HN » Tel. 01-430 2126 (írom abroad 441-430 2126) 213/1988 (E) 2nd September, 1988 Non-Stop Frotest Next to the Románián Embassy in Budapest The non-stop protest which was started on August 22nd next to the Románián Embassy in Budapest continues, it was organised by the "Conscience 88" group in protest at the destruction of villages in Románia. The number of protesters varies from ten to fifty depending on the time of day. Members of the "Free Románia" are alsó present, they had originally planned a 2U hour action linked to a hunger strike on August 23rd, a Románián state holiday. The protesters demands appear on banners and leaflets and they have renamed the little square at the corner of Thököly Street and Istvánmezei Street, where the action takes piacé, "Hungárián-Románián Solidarity Park". A new Street sign has been pút up and several thousand people have signed a petition asking the XIV district council to officially approve the new name. Signatures were alsó collected on the sheet urging the renewal of the Hungarian-Romanian Friendship Soc- iety’s activity. One of its founder members was Zoltán Kodály bút it ceased to function a long time ago. Other independent movements alsó collect signatures at the protest, several thou­sand people signed the protest against the construction of the Bős-Nagymaros dam and a declaration demanding the release of the conscientious objector Zsolt Keszthelyi who is in prison because of his conviction in democracy.
