On September 2-3rd the Danube Circle, the World Wildlife Fund and the International River Network will hold an environmentalist conference in the Congress hall of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences. Twenty-five foreign and national environmental experts will deliver lectures and M.P.s and public figures will alsó take part. They. will analyse the probable dis- ruption of the natural environment. A press conference was held on August 24-th about the conference which is to be called "Danube Barrages", the organisers include János Vargha, András Lányi and László Vit, well-known figures in the independent Danube move- ments. On Friday August 26th László Maróthy the Minister of the Environment and Water Supply met with Professors Imre V. Nagy and Ferenc Antoni, tfre leaders of the Hungárián Environmoital Union which operates under the auspices of the Patriotic Peoples Front. Nőt a word was said about halting construction, they only emphasised the importance of social control. Yesterdgy afternoon the Pál Vásárhelyi Society, which was forraed very quickly,. held lectures and debates about the problems of Bős-Nagymaros. The Pre- sident of the society is Dr András Szöllősi-Nagy who is the deputy-manager of the Water Economy Scientific Research Centre which belongs to the National Water Authority. The raeeting, to which only a few independent environmentalists were invited, was shown on Hungárián Television.
