1988. 1988.05.10. Interjú Kádár Jánossal / HU_BFL_XIV_47_2

MCLAUGHLIN: One decade, two decades, or more? KADAR: They need somé tough years. MCLAUGHLIN: Why are you so sure that General Secretary Gorbachev will succeed? KADAR: I'm sure about it. This is one of life's demands, this new direction. MCLAUGHLIN: You mean this is an idea whose time has come? KADAR: That's right. The situation is ripe fór it. MCLAUGHLIN: He will succeed over all opposing forces including his political enemies, including the inertia of the bureaucracies, including the right wing and his military? He will succeed over all of those? KADAR: This trend will be victorious, in spite of all the difficulties, because this means progress fór the Soviet Union, and the Soviet people. MCLAUGHLIN: You have met Mr. Gorbachev 'several times. You have known him fór a number of years? KADAR: I know him. MCLAUGHLIN: How many years? KADAR: I couldn't say that offhand, bút I got to know him as a local district secretary, at the time he was still working in the provinces. MCLAUGHEIN: Do you think he's brilliant? KADAR: I consider him to be a mán who bases his stands on principles, one who sees the situation in keeping with reality, a reálist, a brave thinker, and a brave mán who has exceptional gifts to be able to coramunicate what it is that he is struggling fór. MCLAUGHLIN: Gromyko says that he has iron teeth behind his smile. KADAR: Well, that I have nőt yet perceived, his iron hand. I don't know. Fór me that is fiction. When I say that he conducts a policy based on principles, that alsó implies resolution, bút nőt an iron hand. It only implies consistency. jr «-17-
