The meeting took piacé as a round table discussion between members of the Democratic Opposition Moveraent entitled: "The End Of ,Consensus*The quoting of "Consensus" signifies that a true consensus, a reál agreement between the aims and evaluation of power and society has never existed. The Jurta Theatre which seats 320 was filled with about five-six hundred people. The meeting was opened by Mihály Horváth who announced a memóriái tour to the Rések labour camp where a memóriái tablet will be Iáid and on June 11th the Club’s Council will organise a 1 day conference in Szentendre to which everybody was welcome. ff The first lecturer, the sociologist Csaba Ory, spoke about the aims and history of the Scientific Workers Democratic Union and its constitution a xeroxed copy of which was distributed among the audience. After this Tamás Molnár a graphic artist spoke on behalf of the independent art group INCONNU and said that the group had always held that the establishment of a democratic political culture was more important than artistic virtuosity and that is why it is persecuted. After their trip to London somé of their members were nőt permitted to travel. Molnár emphasised that contem- porary social movements - with the exception of the Young Democrats Alliance - operate rather as cultural circles than as political movements and that the májőrity of society acts as a supporter or observer rather than creating its own fate. Finally he read out the group’s declaration entitled "The Reflexes of Defence" which states that society and the Party membership forced the collapse of the Kádár government bút that the power which is now concentrated in Karoly Grósz’s hands is such that it could create an autocratic dictatorship. Following this László Vit an engineer reported on the achievonents and situation of the independent environmentalist movements and announced a demonstration planned today in front of the Austrian Embassy in protest against the construction of the Bos-Nagymaros dam. Dr. Viktor Orbán spoke on behalf of the Young Democrats Alliance. He said, to much applause, that the YDA is now a legal organisation and that the loss of their libel case was nőt a defeat bút a victory because Mrs Vladimir Madarász President of the court - secretary of the City Court’s Party branch organisation - avoided the main question during the verdict: the question of the legal existence of the YDA. The politicians' statement - he said - was just an opinion, one that did nőt correspond with the will of society. The last speaker Ferenc Miszlivetz , who was a sociologist, praised the spontaneous organisation of society and government policy. Miklós Gáspár Tamás a philosopher drew attention to the fact that democracy must nőt be spoken about bút learnt and practised, hopes must nőt be placed in the government or in compromises bút in the ferment of society when reading from his study entitled "Can Democratic Cheese Be Made From Bolshevik Chalk?". Dr. Gyula Erdei said that he fasts every weekend in protest against the illegal withdrawal of his passport. He has sent letters to 18 places demanding either the reason fór this decision or his passport. Antal Bogád. a postai worker, spoke of the necessity of spreading democratic movements.
