The art group which has worked in Budapest fór five years has now issued an announcement on its tenth anniversary. The declaration stresses that the INCONNU group - as it has fór a decade - believes that artistic freedom cannot be divorced from the entirety of democratic freedom rights and that this is especially true of the cultural inherit- ance of East-Central Europe. Historical traditions obiige artists in these count- ries to strive fór spiritual autonomy and act against censorship. The declaration then turnéd to artistic responsibility and sadly stated that in Hungary in recent decades many artists had served short-sighted political interests and had consequently lost support from society. The declaration says that "Many of the representatives of our intellectual life were among the first to shake hands with the vindictive authorities after the 1956 revolution. Although only indi- rectly, they collaborated in creating harmful tendencies which contributed to the present cultural and spiritual erosion. That is why Hungárián intellectuals paid a great price fór ostensible and temporary consensus." The five-member INCONNU independont art group’s declaration finally requests todays artists - at the beginning of the reconstruction of civil society and its self-organisation - nőt to fali behind other social groups, to struggle to establish democratic ideas and to be an example to the young once again as they were in times pást in the prominent periods of the fight fór self-deter- mination.
