On rádió, television and in the Satur- day papers a Hungárián News Agency report was published which said that the new youth organisation was illegal, the commentary in the paper Magyar Hírlap (Hungárián News) repeated and extended the accusations saying that it was politically suspect. The meeting lasted until 1 am, after the restaurant had closed it continued in a priváté fiat. Those present, whether members or nőt, signed the dsclaration of support, the YDA s organisers gave an account of the circumstances surrounding the above mentioned police waming which was read out in the police building in Tolnai Lajos Street which is part of the Interior Ministry’s State Security Examination Sub-division. After this one of the organisers gave a legal commentary on the steps taken against them by the authorities and on the press reports. The commentary begins - "Despite all the efforts of its founders (press conferences, written information to all magazines, papers, rádió, eto,/ theYDA’s official and public declarations could nőt enter national publicity forums". It goes on to quote a number of paragraphs from the Hungárián Republic’s constitution and Civil Rights Code which prove that the establishment of the organisation was legal in every sense and fulfilled all the legal regulations and requirements. The YDA is nőt a unión bút a national social organisation whose operation is acknowledged by the constitution and which is a legal body according to the Code of Civil Rights. The YDA became a legal body on March 30th when it was founded, to say it is illegal infringes the personal rights of its organisers, rights which are ensured by the Code of Civil Rights. The meeting’s participants believed strongly in the justice of their case. One of the speakers said that "We have three sheilds: publicity, membership support and the lawfulness of our operation. Many took part in the debate and the most important question was addressed - what to do next. Finally three ballots took piacé. They first of all decided to issue an information circular containing their political statements. In the next ballot they voted on whether to continue operating in the face of the authorities regulations. Only one voted to cease further activities bút fifteen were of the opinion to continue the work of the organisation passively while recruiting more members and supporters, the máj őrity - 32 YDA members - stated that they should continue operating despite the unlawful police waming, that they will call a congress and will request press corrections from the dailies, if the papers refuse they will initiate a libel suit against them. Finally - in the last ballot - they unanimously decided to hold a solidarity action if any of them were harassed by the authorities.
