The report is concerned vith the position of those of Románián nationality who were forced to flee from their country. It states that the influx of Hungárián and Románián refugees intő the country continues although the Ceau^escu régimé has stopped issuing passports. The refugees’ situation has im- proved to a certain extent by govemment measures which were brought about by public pressure and voluntary charity work bút the treatment of the Románián nat- ional minority is still cause fór concem. Support from the authorities is often discriminatory and disadvantageous and the Ministry of the Interior threatens those without valid papers to be sent back to Románia. The Committee had stressed in its earlier reports that the Hungárián refugees must be given preference bút they believe the present treatment of the Romanians is morally unacceptable and politically dangerous they therefőre submit three proposals. They are as follows: "1. The U.N. High Commissioner Fór Refugees must be asked to set up an agency in Hungary so that steps can be taken outside the sphere of the competent govemment here. 2. Temporary residence permits must be given to Románián refugees unconditionally and immediately. Those who intend or are forced to travel further should be given stateless passports. 3. An exact and publicly stated allocation must be made of Romanians who are given permission to resettle." The report added that the Hungárián govemment "cannot postpone the fulfilment of these demands a day longer". Finally the Refugee Committee - presumably referring to "Románia Libera" (Free Románia) group in Hungary - expresses its delight that Románián refugees in Hungary have recently formed an independent committee to represent their interests. The report was dated April lOth and signed by 14 people. The committee sits every after- noon in the week between 2-8 pm, the telephoné number is 335-002. On Tuesday and Friday Románián is alsó spoken.
