Kras-sé 5/1988 (E) 9th January,1988 Letter Fron Hungary to HoneckerAbout Pollce Actlon In November As is véli knovn, at the end of November imraediately after the International seminar held in Budapest, conceming the cooperation of European democratic movements, had ended the Germán Democratic Republic’s police searched the ZION evangelical church in Berlin. They confiscated duplicating machines, publications and manuscripts and arreated numerous members of independent ecological and peace groupa. A "vigil group" vaa established in the church by the associates of those arreated, they lit candlea and stayed together night and day until their companions vere releaaed. According to the nevs criminal proceedings continue against a number of those releaaed. At the end of December 23 Hungárián citizens sent a letter to Erich Honecker, the president of the GDR’s council of state, in connection with the police action. The English version of the Germán text is as follovs: Dear Mr President^ We vere relieved to be informed of the release of those arrested in the ZION church. Bút in spite of our joy ve could nőt forget that the authorities of the GDR infringed basic humán rights by carrying out this action in the church. The contributors to the independent joumals Umveltblátter and Grenzfall and activists in the "Peace and Humán Rights" group vere harassed, persecuted and arrested fór freely expressing their opinions. The éra vhen free thinking vas suppressed throughout Europe by a Germán state is remembered by the vorld vith fear and loathing. The Germán nation has alsó suffered too often from this oppression. Historical experience varns every Germán governeraent to ensure that humán rights especially freedom of thought, vith vhich - in Schiller*a vords - the vorld vili be reborn, are never infringed upon on Germán soil. As democratic thinkers and Hungárián citizens ve demand- the assurance of vritten and verbal free speech in the spirit of the U.N. Humán Rights Declaration and the Helsinki Final Document,- that all oppressive regulations against those vho exercise freedom of the press cease, the restitution of all the vritings and printed matériái confiscated in the.
