Hungárián Citizpas Fifteen Hungárián citizens - the májőrity of them participants in the Demo- cratic Opposition Movement - published a declaration on January 21st. They called upon the people of Hungary to svitch off the lights in their flats at 10 in the evening on February lst as a show of protest against the despotism of the Ceaupescu régimé and of solidarity with the Románián people. The text of the announcement is as follows: The Czech humán rights movement Charter 77 has declared February lst a day of solidarity fór the Románián people who suffer under a dictatorship. We Hungarians - in addition to our support fór them - have further reasons fór commemorating: more than two millión national minority Hungarians suffer because of the despotism of the Ceau^escu dictatorship. Several thousand Hungarians and dozens of Romanians fled to Hungary from Transylvania. Their fate is uncertain: quite a few of them were handed over to the Románián dictator’s political police. We ask you: to switch out the lights in your flats fór three minutes at lOpm on February lst as a mark of protest. The democratic civil rights group the Free Romanians alsó ask you to do this. Let us be in darkness fór three minutes like the unfortunate peoples of Románia, before the same darkness falls on us. These three minutes should alsó wara the Hungárián government that they have a responsibility too. Only autonomous democratic governments in East-Europe can prevent imminent tragedy in the area.
