A week ago László Rusai was taken from Eger police station to the psychiatric várd of the Budapest National Prison, better known as the transit prison. The first news has arrived concerning László' Rusai who, after being’ harassed by the police Por a long period, was taken intő custody in Hatvan on November 9th. Rusai was kept in solitary Por more than two weeks in Eger, during this period he was taken to the hospital at Miskolc where he was classiPied as of sound mind and culpable. Yet a Pew days later,,on November 2^th, the authorities decided that Rusai should be taken to Budapest, to the transit prison’s psychiatric obser— vation ward. J / 4 $ László Rusai - one of the editors of the samizdat periodical Efrta.jak Kó'zó'tt (Between Points of the Compass) - was first arrested in 1985 Por no reason, later the charges were dropped, and during the 39 days he spent on remand,.again in Eger, he was beaten so badly that he had to récéivé medical attention afterwards. In October of last year, in the days before the 30th anniversary of the revolution, he was taken by force Por comp- ulsory police medical treatment in Gyöngyös hospital. He received no treatment bút was locked up from the outside world fór several weeks. This summer Rusai was pronounced healthy by the psychiatrist at Pesthi- degkut although he was prescribed sedatives. After his árrést he did nőt récéivé his medecines. Rusai is now accused of allegedly writing "unsuitable" words in chalk on the Soviet Memóriái Monument in Hatvan. His friends announced that the inhabitants of Hatvan know nothing of such an "inscription" and gave voice to their concem that Rusai’s "prolonged solitary confinement and possüle beatings could be ploys to Porcé a confession from him Por an action he did nőt cotnmit". Alarming though it is the police are now emp- loying political psychiatric means fór the second time in Rusai’s case. József Talata, an editor colleague of Rusai’s, was alsó summoned last week by the IX district police in Budapest bút he could nőt appear as the writ was delivered to him laté. 0 h-
