Rras-só 134-/1987 (E) 21 st November, 1987 László Rusai is Arrested Again 32 year old László Rusai who lives in Hatvan was arrested in his fiat in Hatvan on November 9th and has been held on remand in Eger police station since then. László Rusai is a member of the "Vox Humana" Circle and is one of the editors of the samizdat periodical Égtájak kozott (Betveen Points of the Compass). Previously he was a college educator bút was dismissed from his job. In 1985 Rusai addressed an elective nominating committee in Hatvan after which he was taken intő custody. During his 39 days spent on remand in Eger police station he was so badly beaten by two officers that he had to have psychiatric treatment; after this he received a police authority waming. In 1986 on October 20th, after signing the common East- European declaration fór the 30th anniversary of the revolution, he was forcibly removed to Gyöngyös hospital and then to the closed psychiatric ward in Visonta where he was illegally given compulsory medical treatment fór several weeks without a judicial decisión. The persecution of Rusai did nőt cease this year. In July the Hatvan police began harass him continually in his mothers and in his own fiat. They forced entry many times and took his writings. Rusai’s crime was that he pút the old Hungárián arms in his window several times. This year Rusai did nőt spend the days before and after October 23rd at home because he was afraid of more police violence and he only returned home at the beginning of November. On November 4-th his window was smashed in with a brick. On Monday November 9th at 6.30 pm seven piain clothes detectives arrived at Rusai’s mothers house in Hatvan, 12 Székely Street, in two cars; it later turnéd out that they were from Eger police station. They conducted a house search and confiscated nőt only Rusai’s books and writings bút his typewriter and money as well. After this they went to Rusai’s fiat in Hegyalj a Street, broke down the door and took everything from there too. Although they only found one samizdat publication - one copy of the independent periodical Deirokrata - Rusai was arrested and taken to Eger police station. Their explanation was that someone had written "unsuitable words" on the Soviet Memóriái Monument in Hatvan and Rusai was suspected of com- mitting the "crime". László Rusai is seriously ill. His G.P. in Budapest was nőt informed so he does nőt get his medicines which should be taken regularly. His mother was allowed to visit him on Thursday November 19th bút a detective sat next to them and forbade them to talk about the proceedings or Rusai’s situation. In the Budapest seminar focussing on links between East and West which started today two of Rusai’s friends and editor colleagues - Mikolta Bognár and József Talata - succeeded in speaking about these events in the afternoon. They alsó read out a declaration signed by many people in which they ask support fór László Rusai’s release. I^ászló Rusai submitted this poem in the last issue of the samizdat periodical Égtájak kozott (Between Points of the Compass): I LIVE As a pariah A s a hunted animal In this police state Help mei I perish •••-1
