In the meeting László Sólyom spoke about the attempt to found the society and its present state. He read out the decision of the National Environment and Natúré Conservation Office (OKTH) which refused the request concerning the foundation of the society and prohibited any further organisation of it. He outlined two programmes broadcast on Budapest rádió - the interview connected with the affair and the president of the OKTH’s answer then he read out the complaint sent by the organizers of the Society to the Council of Ministers on 23rd September which has still hot been answered. Great interest was shown in the letter (which was alsó read out) sent by ecologists at the time of the Summer National Meeting to parliamentary representátivés. The authors of the letter completely denied numerous statements made by Dr Kálmán A'brahám, president of the OKTH, in his parliamentary account. This report was followed by a debate. One of the speakers proposed that an ecological society should be established without official permission, bút the majority agreed with László Solyom who replied that they should endeavour to establish a legal society. The organizers will wait patiently fór the Council of Ministers reply which will reveal what happens if the will of the party contradicts constitutional civil rights. t / The curator of the "Danube Foundation" Ágoston Peterffy said that eight competition works had arrived fór the environmental competition and that the awards would be decided within a week. One of the speakers - a university student - announced that fór a week beginning on l6th November he and somé companions would wear gas masks on the street as a protest against air pollution and that they can be ohtained in pharmacies.. He asked those present to jóin the action. The audience were alsó informed that those who were interested in continuing ecological activities while waiting fór the final answer to the request about the foundation of the Society could meet in the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Circle (which operates with the patronage of the People's Patriotic Front) on Népköztársaság Street in the People's Front Headquarters on 27th November. On 30th November in the Law College in Menesi Street there will be a lecture concerned with ecology and society. The discus^ion lasted until laté intő the night, West Germán tourists interested in ecology alsó took part, they had been informed by chance at the last moment. i yf /
