October, 1987 Gommemoration in Budapest on October 6 On October 6 1849 Lajos Batthyány, the revolutionary govemment’s prime minister was executed in Pest and thirteen of the freedom fight’s military leaders were killed in Arad. Yesterday afternoon about fifty people commemorated this event in an unofficial demonstration by the sanctuary lamp in Budapest. The máj őrity of those taking part in this commemoration were older members of the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Friendship Society, which comes under the auspices of the Patriotic Peoples Front, and young representatives of the Democratic Opposition. The participants garlanded the monument with flowers. Tibor Philipp, a member of the independent art group INCONNU, Iáid a wreath woven with Hungárián colours and decorated with laurel on which a black ribbon was pinned which read "The Hungárián Democratic Opposition". Then Róbert Pálinkás, the youngest member of the INCONNU group, made a short speech: Dear Friendsí We last met here on June 16 of this year, the anniversary of the execution of the last legitimate prime minister of Hungary, Imre Nagy, when the Democratic Opposition re-christened the sanctuary lamp Lajos Batthyány-Imre Nagy. October 6 is the anniversary of the execution of Lajos Batthyány and his martyrs. Let us pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives to the 48 freedom fight and since then to the idea of an independent Hungary! After making the speech Róbert Pálinkás recited Gyula Illyés’s poem "One sentence on Tyranny", and then those assembled sang the second Hungárián National Anthem. The commemoration began at 5 o’clock in the afternoon in the presence of many uniforméi and piain clothes police, it lasted 20 minutes. The Democratic Opposition’s wreath was removed from the lamp’s plinth during the night.
