Two months later the foundation organisers issued the following circular announcing the competition: THE DANUBE FOUNDATION It came intő being in May 1987, initiated by eleven of us. It was set up with the money from the alternative Nobel Price which was awarded by The Right Livelihood Foundation to the Danube Circle, as recognition fór its activity opposing, with other groups, the ecologically disastrous plán fór the Bős-Nagymaros dam (promoting public information and free speech). The award strengthened our activities "making our lives more complete". In addition we had an obligation to aid further the development of ecological thought and the protection of the environment in Hungary. In recent years environmental destruction has become a major problem in our country and a number of environmental protection initiatives have been seen. We feel that the award is a tribute of respect from many thousands of others as well. The establishment of the Danube Foundation relies on responsible and prepared citizens, we ask their support and will help them with our modest means.
