Rros*ó 79/1987/E/ 16-th June, 1987 "Lajos Batthyány ~ Imre Nagy"Memorial Wick in Budapest On the 16 th of June, 29 years today, Imre Nagy, prime minister of revolutionary Hungary was executed alongside with many others. The anniversary was marked hy a demonstration of the Hungárián democratic opposition. The demonstrators carried large banners and rosettes and re-named the "Lajos Batthyány Memóriái Wick" to be "Lajos Batthyány - Imre Nagy Memóriái Wick". The demonstration started from a nearby house and arrived at the memóriái wick at lo:5o am. Ferenc Kőszeg and Tibor Philipp were marching in the front line each carrying a banner. The first one read: "Lajos Batthyány, prime minister of Hungary. Executed on the 6th of November 1849." And the other: "Imre Nagy, prime minister of Hungary. Executed on the 16th of June 1958." Immediately behind walked Gáspár Miklós Tamás carrying a banner more than six feet long, bearing only these three words: "Remember Imre Nagy!" A cockade about lo inches in diameter, coloured red, white and green was brought by Mikolta Bognár on behalf of the Vox Humana group. The demonstrators who had been awaited by other members of the Hungárián democratic opposition placed the banners on the pediment of the memóriái wick inside the iron railings and the cockade was placed on top of the small edifice. With ! this simbolic act the monument was declared to be the "Lajos Batthyány - Imre Nagy Memóriái Wick". Members of the democratic opposition were joined by passers-by swelling their numbers to about 6o. However, a large number of police had been rallied in the circumjacant square and the neighbouring streets. The two banners were quickly removed by plain~cloth.es detectives. The large banner was alsó wrested out of the hands of its bearers until only the cockade remained on the monument. The uniformed and plain-clothes policemen closed off the Street and summoned the demonstrators to disperse, then pushed them off to the opposite pavement. Inspite of this the demonstration concluded without any major act of police brutality. Popular feeling is one of unquiet and anxiety in Hungary - even leaders of the party talk of the necessity of change. The Hungárián democratic opposition has again voiced its con~ viction, made manifest in today*s christening demonstration, that political revival is only imaginable if based on the ideas of 1956.
