Kroi*6 77/1987/E/ 11th June, 1987 Név/ House Search at Jenő Nagy's Following the Publication of 'Tasue No, 6 of the "Democrat" Last night the Budapest poltical police again raided the House of Jenő hagy, principal editor of the independent publishing house ABC. This police action had been preceded by years of police harassment. Jenő Hagy aged 35 who live in a modest council fiat with his wife and two children is best known fór having organized together with Gábor Demszky Hungárián samizdat publishing seven years ago. The police have made regular raids on his house since 1982. Jenő Hagy continued his work undaunted and in his capacity as organizer of the ABC independent publishing house has brought out more than 5o important publications, including a növel by Arthur Koestler, an István Bibó memóriái volume, and writings of György Konrád. When he launched the Democrat early in 1986, a periodical known as the most outspoken and bőid joumal of the opposition, the police retaliated by an unprecedented series of punitive measures. House searches, interrogations, fines and legal proceedings followed one another in endless procession, yet every issue of the "Democrat" appeared and Jenő Hagy was surrounded by young people who met weekly under the name of "Democratic Club", and braving all police threats a ceremony on the occassion of the 3oth anniversary ■ of the 1956 revolution was held in his house. Punitive measures were increased in consequence . His house was raided last' Christmas, this February he was finedlo ooo Forints, another fine in a trumped-up case of 182 ooo Forints, the sequestration of assets, almost nightly police visits, another raid in March and a further fine of lo ooo Forints. The police appeared at Jenő Nagy1s house again yesterday, loth of June at 11 pm. Nagy asked to see their warrant which the policemen refused to produce. They switched off the house’s electric meter and emploj^ed a locksmith to enter the premises. The plain-clothes detectives then showed their police cards, bút the uniformed members of the raiding party as well as the "witnesses fór the authorities" refused to do so. Ignoring Nagy's protest against such witnesses the police conducted a raid on a "grave suspicion of breach of press regulations". The raid lasted till 12:5o am and resulted in the copfiscation of manuscripts and samizdat publications. The authorities had their current reasons fór revenge. The 6th issue of the Democrat, edited and published by Nagy, contained the following articles: "Chronicle of Repression" which dealt with the persecution of dissidents with particular regard to the inprisonment of Zsolt Keszthelyi; the measures afflicting the Hungárián ethnic minority living in Czecho-Slovakia, based on the reports of the Hungárián News Agency in Czecho- Slovakia; this issue alsó contained reports about the programne of the Budapest Altemative Cultural Centre and an article "Tűm of the Tide and Reform". Another article dealt with the projected liquidation of the Pecuniary Research Institute
