Krasső 55/1987 M 8th May, 1987 "Alternative Cultural Centre11 Opened in Budapest The organisers, among them members of the independent artist group INCONNU, made known on home-made manifolded invitation cards, that on the 8th of May, Friday at 3pm, in the building at 165 Erdőalja Street, III. district, Budapest, a comraunity house, an "alternative cultural centre" will be opened. Evén this simple announcement means a challenge to the Hungárián authorities, because the unauthorised multiplication of documents is an infringement of regulations, in the jurisdiction of the police, which is to be punished by fine up to 10,000 forints. On the reverse of the invitation card the organisers of the vents of the commu- nity house announce their programme, in the spirit of which they intend to run their institution. This programme runs as follows: "A peculiarity of Eastem European societies is the state monopoly of cul- ture. This contradicts the essence of the concept; it means its dismemberment. The free flow and contest of ideas and information is the only possible means of the free self-construction of the culture and society. By founding our altemative cultural centre we would like to assure such a fórum free of coercion, opposing restrictions, in support of independent intellectual manifes- tations. We support equally the branches of art (literature, fine arts, theatre) and scientific research dealing with basic problems of society { sociology, philosophy, economics, etc.). In our programmes we give piacé every world- view bőm in the spirit of humanity. One of our ideas is to establish contact with the cultural life of other countries in order to open wider horizons. We reckon on those members of society, who are supporters of the independent culture and mentality proclaimed in our programme." Independent social initiatives are increasingly gaining ground in Hungary, in spite of every restriction and retaliation. Xj
