They destroyed the statue of Staiin and the credibility of a régimé which claimed to represent the dictatorship of the proletariat and the people's repubiie. Their struggle shcwed clearly that what the Hungárián people really wanted was ir.dependence, democracy and neutrality. They wanted to live in peace in a decent and free society. The Hungárián revolution as well as the East Berlin up- risir.g, the Prague Sprir.g, and the social movement of the free trade unión Soiidarity in Pola.nd were suppressed, either by Soviet interver.ticn or by local armed intervention.
