Krasaó 49/1987 /E/ 27th April, 1987 Protesting Leaflet of the "Zsolt Keszthelyi CoInInltteel, On the 27th of April»in the aftermath of the conviction of Zsolt Keszthelyi, the solidarity group formed earlier to follow his trial with attention started to distribute a raanifolded leaflet in Budapest. The text of the leaflet runs as follows: '•The military court sentenced today the 23 years old teacher of English, Zsolt Keszthelyi, fór three years imprisonment. He must endure imprisonment, because he is reluctant to serve as soldier of a govemment which hasn't been elected by democratic means. In Hungary thousands of peaceful youths have been sentenced fór long prison terras because of objection to military service on different bút similarly conscientious grounds. Those anxious about the fate of Zsolt Keszthelyi and his fellow sufferers, have formed a committee to follow the developments of Zsolt Keszthelyi's trial with attention and to make them known regularly to the public both inland and abroad. At the same time we request the peace-loving and law- abiding people to raise their voices against the arbitrary detention of Zsolt Keszthelyi and his fellow sufferers. In the interest of them and of the whole country we State the following: 1. Universal conscription and enlistment should be abolished in Hungary. 2. TJhtil such time as thig distant objective can be realised, optional peaceful service must be made possible. There is a greater need fór nurses and caretakers fór the elderly than fór the already too long confinement of the soldiers of a low quality and oversized army. 3. As long as new, appropriate legal safeguards are nőt in effect, amnesty must be granted to those imprisoned because of conscientious objection to military service and the initiation of new trials must be given up.
