Wick and the Bem Statue on the 15th of March, 1987 On March the 15th 1987, anniversary of the 1848 democratic revolution, a large- scale political demonstration took piacé in Budapest after the end of the official celebrations. The nearly 3,000 participants were led by those repre- sentatives of the democratic opposition movement who have been less known hitherto. Speeches were made at the traditional places of tribute /se No.27/1987 issue of the Hungárián October Information Centre/. Here below we print the speeches of György Gadó given at the Kossuth Statue in front of the Parliament and at the Batthyány Memóriái Wick and the speech which Tibor Pákh delivered at the Bem Statue in Buda. György Gadó’s speech at the Kossuth Statue, in front of the Parliament Hungarians! Young People! The winter has been long, the winter has been very long, bút spring will come, it will have to come. Our nation, our society must renew itself. The young people of Hungary will certainly play a role in this. Be this renewal a peaceful one - I emphasize that we do nőt want violence bút it should be determined! We want democracy, reál freedom rights, freedom of speech, national freedom of the press, freedom to assemble. The democratic opposition too will have a role in the achievement of these. Long live the Hungárián youth! Long live the Hungárián renewal! Long live the Hungárián democratic opposition! Long live the century old ideál of Hungárián democracy! Long live the reál freedom rights: freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, freedom of the press! György Gadó’s speech at the Batthyány Memóriái Wick My fellow patriots! My friends! We have come here to commemorate Lajos Batthyány, martyr of the freedom of our nation, and those who even before 1848, then in 1848-49 and again after 1949 gave their lives fór the freedom of Hungary. We hope that the day will come when we will be able to pay our tribute of respect to the memory of Imre Nagy at a piacé like this. Like Lajos Batthyány, Imre Nagy was nőt looking fór martyrdom either bút he did what homeland and his own conscience demanded from him. Let us trust that Hungárián democracy will renew itself, the economic reform will advance and through its consistent renewal political democracy too will progress. Tibor Pákh’s speech at the Bem Statue Ladies and Gentlemen, my dear young friends! Allow me, your old friend, to remember with a few words about this holiday. What can be the reason fór our pilgimage to the statue of old mán Bem year after year?
