Krassó 14/1987 /E/ 2nd March, 1987 Statement by the Hungárián democratic opposition concerning the case of Zsolt Keszthelyi Zsolt Keszthelyi, a youth of 23 years, was arrested on the 25th of February, 1987, after having failed to obey the call-up order effective on the morning of the same day ( see 1987 reports No. 8, 12 and 13 of Hungárián October Information Centre ). Keszthelyi is the first in Hungary known so far, who rejects military service nőt on the grounds of his religious, hűt of his political con- viction: he is unwilling to serve in an army, which is nőt under the control of a democratically elected government. The trial of Zsolt Keszthelyi will take piacé soon; in the years pást objectors refusing to do military service were sentenced fór two or three years in prison. Members of the Hungárián democratic opposition took a stand on the case of Zsolt Keszthelyi in a statement. Statement A few days ago the university student Zsolt Keszthelyi, one of the organi- zers and contributors of samizdat, the Hungárián independent press, refused to do military service. He stated that he was unwilling to serve in an army, which doesn't get his orders from a democratically elected government. On the 25th of February, 1987, he was arrested. Those signed below express their sympathy fór his courageous deed,at the same time they believe that it would be wise of the government to let the military prosecutor's office drop the charge or to judge the case mildly in somé other way. We shall follow the fate of Zsolt Keszthelyi with attention.
