document of the period, the objects, tools, resolutions and judgements which reflect the failure of the centrally directed disciplinary cultural policy. We can State without pride that we are succeeding. There has nőt been one single period in Hungárián history in which within such a relatively short time so many shameful punishments, threats to artists and persecution of árts could be observed as in the present one. 5. We are deeply anxious regarding this autocratically banned exhibition as well - worried that generations a few decades from now when looking back will nőt be able to see anything bút the minutes of decisions banning exhibitions, the ashes of burnt films, the shreads of pulped books, the scissored-out pages of silenced journals, the souveniers of Creative collectives, the legends of the talented ones driven to alcoholism, suicide and emigration. We recall with our work the political irresponsibility directed from above and the intolerance shown towards cultural plurality. With our documents all we wish to do is to remind and to warn. 6. Finally, as organisers of "The Fighting City" exhibition we owe a duty to those artists who honoured us with their trust and sent us the pictures of memory. In their name and in the name of the living memory of Magyar October we resolutely demand the immediate return of the confiscated works of art. We request you to do everything fór the cessation of this illegal State of affairs and fór the complete fulfilment of our demand. 7. We consider our letter as another document of political art.
