Kras-si 2/1987 /£/ 3ra danuary, 1937 Ths 1987 New Yaar’s iüessage from King iuicnael of Románia King Michael, Románián king living in ecigration, issued tne following Hew Year’s mesaage to the Rocanian people: ROMARIARS! 1986 is Corning to an end, culminating in Reykjavik, as 1985 did in Geneva, with the dialogue of the meetings of the Super Powers of the World, to the dis- appointment of the free world, which sees that the problems of disarmament cannot be solved as long as the present conflicts between East and West continue: the massacres in Afghanistan and Cambodia, as well as the fomenting of revolts in Central America and elsewhere; and as long as behind the Írón Curtain - which is what affects us most - the Communist leaders imposed from outside continue to hold the nations of Eastem Europe enslaved, our own especially: the systematic starva- tion leading to the decimation of the weakest by epidemics, by inanition and by exhaustion, now at the threshold of another winter of darkness, cold unheated houses, great shortages and generál misery. And yet, one raight perceive somé slight change, nőt yet certain bút just possi- ble, foreshadowing the end of an insufferable rule, since the likely heirs of its author have started to stir. Nőne of them, however, would succeed in staying in the saddle without the blessing of the Kremlin, which today is no longer pleased with the retrograde Stalinists, blind and obstinate as they are, bút is seeking to choose as their new local satraps those most able to increase the future revenues of their respective colonies, without nonetheless, deviating from the bases of Communist doctrine. You who are in Románia, you may be able to influence the leadership of the régimé from within, when younger.cadres come to power. In this message, I alsó wish to remind our compatriots everywhere that all the captive peoples of Europe must forget any national antagonisms and must nőt be trapped intő playing Moscow's game, which is to set nation against nation so as to rule them more easily. Thqs, fór us, this obviously concems our coexistence with the Hungarians, those in Hungary and those in exile and especially those who live in Románia. The world tloes nőt stand still. Never before have changes of all kinds and in every sphere proved more abrupt and more unexpected: beliefs, myths and con- victions which once held our minds in sway have now been blown away; empires, which thought themselves eternal, have collapsed. The Day of Judgement will alsó come fór the régimé which wrongs, victimizes and tramples on the very dignity of mán: that régimé which has oppressed our country fór so many years. That üay, the day of our rebirth, must, without fail, alsó be a day of celebration fór the other^ peoples who live in our land: the Hungarians, the Saxona, the Swabians and all the other minority peoples who have ,taken root in our country, born or brought up with us, or united to us by family ties, sharing with us the same hardships and persecutions imposed by those who will have gone; all those of another origin, language or belief should find us with our hearts open and our hands stretched out in true brotherhood. Let us raise up our prayers fór the rebirth of such a Greater Románia, fór the fulfillment of these aspirations: may God help us] At this Holy Feast of Christmas, I and Queen Anne, Princess Margaréta and the whole Royal Family, wish you all a very Happy New Year and Many Years of health and prosperity.
