HIS Press Service No.20, July 1981 Page 6 State that the Church participate in the care of the aged, lonely members of the country's population. In the words of Cardinal Lékai as reported in the March 1 edition of the Catholic weekly "Uj Ember," through this project the Church sees itself providing a genuine evangelical service as its contribution to the development of a modern social system. When viewed in this light, the construction of the Pope John XXIII Retirement Home could constitute a new beginning in a traditional area of Church activity. After a necessary period of preparation, Hungary's Church could again today be in a position to actively aid society in the care of its aged, lonely members. The Hungarian episcopacy could confidently make such an offer to the proper State authorities, and inquire whether the State's leadership is able to come to the aid of Church efforts (as exemplified through the development of Church retirement homes) at serving Hungary's citizens by allowing the Church's own personnel - in this case the members of the religious orders - to perform needed services, or whether the contribution of these persons to the activity of the Church within Hungary is to continue to be that of a gradually disappearing1 group of persons occupying Church retirement homes.
