Press-Service--------Special Topic "ligion and Church in Hungary ___________________ No.19 - VI ENNa, March 1981 Statistics on Hungary's Church In connection with a study of priestly vocations, a number of Church statistics were compiled in 1980 by a group of persons qualified for such work. Although the figures contained in the 1980 data provided by the country's diocesan chan­ceries and seminaries are not considered official statistics, they are for all practical purposes used and made public as such by the Church. The Annuario is supplied with its data on Hungary by the Hungarian Bishops Confer­ence. Like those in the diocesan statistical reports which appear from time to time, these figures too are not the result of regularly undertaken statistical surveys. The last official survey of the number of Catholics living in Hungary was made during the course of the 1949 national census. At that time, 6,488,782 of the country's 9,204,799 inhabitants indicated that they were Catholics
