HIS Press Service No.12. November 1978 Page 6 1 evaluate these questions and the answers given. In addition, the students report on the course work they have already completed. These weekends also offer them an opportunity to talk about their personal problems. In an introductory talk, the individual professors explain the approaches the students should take in studying the manuscripts they have been provided with. (At present, the manuscripts received by the extension course participants contain the material offered in the regular courses given at the theological colleges. Plans have already been made, however, to publish manuscripts written specifically for the extension course members.)These consultation weekends will be conducted by professors from Budapest's Theological Academy, who will be assisted by professors from Hungary's various seminaries. Fourteen professors were originally suggested for the consultations; twelve of them were accepted. EVALUATION The theology extension course which is being conducted at Budapest's Theological Academy was something long hoped for by Hungary's Church, and is of great importance for it. It was a constantly reoccurring need of the faithuf that played a major role in the decision to offer the course; namely their need for a better understanding of the faith. There was also the hope on their part that an expanded knowledge of theology would increase their ability to actively participate in Church life. The statutes presently governing the course, however, stand in mutual contradiction to one another: On the one hand, the regulations required by the laws on education are adhered to for administrative reasons. On the other, however, successful completion of the course does not permit the exercise of activities for which special training is required, such as holding religious instructions, or carrying out the duties connected with the diaconate or the administration of a parish. All of these, however, are positions which persons in the Churches of the Western world can take over without further ado upon completion of a theological education equivalent to that offered by the Academy's new extension course. In spite of this, it is to be hoped that the present extension course, which is still in the experimental stage, will also be made available as soon as possible at the other five theological colleges in Hungary. This intention was stated in the Original decision of December 1976 for good reason: The course being held in Budapest is able to accomodate only a very small percentage of the need existing in this area throughout the country.
