Though available to students in other field of studies, since 1968 shortening of military service is no longer granted to theology students. In 1948, there were still 1,079 diocesan theologians and seminarians in Hungary; in addition, there were 700 theologians and seminarians belonging to religious orders, and 290 minor seminarians. This means that a total of over 2,000 persons were available for the recruitment of new priests. Up to 1952, there were 12 diocesan seminaries in Hungary, a central (i.e. interdiocesan) seminary in Budapest, and nine theological colleges belonging to the various religious orders. After the disbandment of the orders, the latter ceased to exist, and in 1952 the 13 seminaries were reduced to 6: namely the central seminary in Budapest and 5 diocesan seminaries. Since then, the seminarians from several dioceses are grouped together and divided among the 6 remaining seminaries.
