HIS Press Service, April 1977 Page 7 example, it was reported in Hungary's Catholic press that instead of setting up diocesan and national synods in Hungary, the Hungarian bishops had decided to await the decisions of the new Codex Juris Canonici since the important questions would be regulated and modified by this piece of legislation anyway. THE EVALUATION The Hungarian hierarchy has been up to full strength for barely a year now. The obligatory report and the ad limina visit due this year are too early to be able to demonstrate the effects of the new situation in Hungary. In any case, the Vatican has a rather exact understanding of how the Church organization set up in Hungary on the basis of the common negotiations carried on with the Hungarian government for a period of over ten years is functioning. The joint meeting of the Hungarian bishops with the Pope in April of this year, and the report they will give him, offer excellent chances both for reaffirming the promising initiatives undertaken by Hungary's Church and also for eliminating various possible mistakes. One can only hope that this chance will be taken advantage of.
