Hungarians who captured the fortress. Knézich, who had distinguished himself as an excellent division commander during the spring campaign, failed as a corps commander in the combats by the Vág river as a result of which Görgey released him from this post. In July he was appointed the commander of the observing division in Tokaj with the task to prevent the Russians' crossing the Tisza river. On the 27 l July he joined the army commanded by Görgey which marched towards Arad via Tokaj. In the hopeless military situation he alsó approved of the capitulation and together with Görgey's troops he surrendered to the Russians near Világos. Despite their hopes the Russians delivered them to the Austrians. The military tribunal of Arad sentenced Knézich to death by hanging as "a mutineer and a traitor". Together with his twelve fellows he was executed on the 6th October. Soon after that his wife alsó died. His two daughters, Olga and Irén, were taken under protection by the archbishop of Eger, Béla Bartakovics. 185
