A registry of the associations of Debrecen As a result of many years of research, the registry and historical survey of the associations operating in the city of Debrecen was finally completed in the Archives of the Hajdú-Bihar County Government. For each association, the registry contains its name, the date of founding, the number of its members, the name of its president, the objectives of the association, the date of approval of its by-laws, its registration number, and the date of its dissolution. When an association was founded, the by-laws had to be submitted, by way of the local authorities, to the Minister of Interior for approval. If no reply was received within 40 days, the association could be temporarily established, but its final formation could only take place when the by-laws were approved by the Minister. In the by-laws of associations of several different types, the importance of the promotion of the sense of community was emphasised without exception. In many cases the undertaking of an apolitical attitude, or by contrast, a commitment toward the nation and the strengthening of patriotism, was set forth as an objective. It is difficult to answer the question of what role associations may have played in the life of the city. They were present to different extents in various communities, professions, denominations, and in political life. 206
