Noblemen were protecting their most important privilege, fiscal immunity so vehemently that they prevented means tests (that could harm this privilege) to take place. That is why we have to have special interest in resources that contain valuable data about the financial standing of the lower and landed county gentry. The above-mentioned census remained untouched and therefore it makes possible for us to have a closer look at the county noble society. On the basis of the survey’s data we could get an inside view of the financial, social and behavioural characteristics of the Reform Era’s nobility.
