In this paper Lajos Zoltai writes about Debrecen’s waters, about the rivers formed by nature (for example the overflowing of the Tisza river), about the streams, the valleys, brooks, headlands, lakes, marshes, meadows and the ditches, canals, dams, and wells appearing as the work of man, the number of which exceeds even one hundred and fifty. He gives information on the temporal changes in geographic names, and examines the origin and meaning of the names. The author’s objective was to summarise the one-time hydrography of Debrecen.
