Hajdú-Вihar Megyei Levéltár Évkönyve XXIX Archival Sources on the History of Higher Education in Debrecen Agnes Tóth The aim of the essay is to survey the researchable sources of institutes of higher education in Debrecen, and to provide assistance to researchers in locating material they are looking for. By virtue of the Reformed College, Debrecen has had the intellectual attraction of university towns from the 17th century. The College provided a home to academies of law, arts and theology. The university itself only opened in 1914 with three faculties. At the time of the opening of the faculties of theology, law and state science, and arts, languages and history, the academies of the College ceased to exist. The faculty of medicine only opened its gates in November of 1921, since the clinic hospitals had to be established first. This work was only completed by 1926. The construction of the central building commenced in 1927, and after various obstacles, it was finally opened in 1932. In addition to the university faculties, an Institute of Teacher Training and a Secondary School Teachers’ Examining Committee also worked in the city. The latter was responsible for issues related to the content of teacher training, while the former supervised the level of education and helped students in their preparation for a teaching career. The city has offered college level agricultural education since the 19th century, which became the University of Agricultural Sciences in the socialist era. Similarly, Debrecen has had traditions of primary school teacher training and music education. Technical education was organized in the city relatively late, with the establishment of the Miklós Ybl Technical College. An integration process started between the city’s various institutions of higher education, the result of which was that the University of Debrecen was formed on January 1, 2000.
