The Formation of the Prison System in the Hajdú Towns and in the District Sándor Nagy From 1613 to 1757, each Hajdú town had the jus gladii, the power of life and death, and therefore, there was a need for prisons where persons convicted of crimes could be placed under proper custody. There are no contemporary written records as to when and how prisons were set up in each of these towns, but from the sentences handed down we can conclude that prisons did exist. In 1757, Maria Theresa, Queen of Hungary, deprived the Hajdú towns of their jus gladii, and conferred this right to the mutual organization of these towns, the Hajdú District. Subsequently, a prison was constructed in Böszörmény that would house the convicts and suspects of serious crimes committed within the confines of the six Hajdú towns. The essay describes in a chronological order all the municipal decrees and resolutions of the district that determined the rules related to the internal order in the prison, as well as to the manner of treatment of the prisoners. At the beginning of her reign, Maria Theresa forbad the administering of corporal punishment to prisoners. By the end of 18th century, it was an accepted principle in Hungary that the objective of confinement in prisons was the reforming of criminals, and that this objective could only be achieved with humane treatment.
