Bihar vármegye levéltárának iratai sok veszteséget szenvedtek a tárgyalt időszakban és azután is. A levéltárosok áldozatkészsége és ügyszeretete elismerésre méltó, de a hivatali fórumok bizony nem mindig ismerték fel a történeti értékű iratok fontosságát. Az iratpusztulás pedig a múlt feltárásának legfőbb akadálya.

ON THE HISTORY AND WORK OF THE ARCHIVES OF BIHAR COUNTY IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19™ CENTURY

After some introductory observations, the author provides a brief outline of the work of Sándor Jakab, László Gyöngyössy and Viktor Faliczky, chief archivists.

The essay then goes on to discuss the issues of archival classification and weeding out, also referring to the work carried on in other archives of the country. The author alludes to the vicissitudinous situation of the archives and the often indifferent attitude of the county civil servants in the past. The role and importance of the documents of historical value both held by various archives and private individuals is discussed, and especially the significance of local and ecclesiastical documents is emphasised.

Finally, the essay recognises the efforts and working capacity of the archivists of the past, also evaluating their various tasks in public administration and the provision of data.
