Ebben nagy szerepe volt az iskolai oktatásnak és a tömegkommunikáció bővülő eszközeinek is.131 A nép nagy része nyugtalanul érezte, hogy lesz még egyszer tavaszi vihar, de a kietlen jelenből nem tudtak biztató jeleket kiolvasni a jövőre nézve.

Data on the political public feeling in Bihar county in the first years of Hapsburg absolutism

In the introduction the author briefly describes the general historical conditions following the defeat of the Hungarian War of Independence. In the following chapters the reorganisation of public administration is dealt with together with some aspects of socio-economic changes. Data are supplied on the fugitives hiding in the country and those convicted, then one can read about the two main organisations of absolutism: the gendarmerie and the tax authorities. In the last chapter data are given on the political atmosphere, forced loyalty and the self-justification attempts of those who participated in the revolutionary events. There occurred smaller or greater incidents, and the author makes mention of some covert forms of resistance.

Nor is to be ignored the role of the Protestant churches, to which the study makes one or two references. During the period of absolutism some renowned poets appeared in this region; the authorities of absolutism continued, for years, the search for persons having participated in the War of Independence. As is well known ordinary people tended to protect and hide these heroes. The national and patriotic ethos was gradually strengthened in the period under study.
