április 5-i keltezéssel az országos elnök Balogh Sándor levelet intézett az egyletekhez, köztük a debrecenihez is. Ebben a szokásos dolgok, a nyugdíjügy, a honvédnév el nem ismerése szerepelt, s az is, hogy már csak 3100 fő 48/49-es honvéd él. A végén pedig meghívó állt a május 20-án tartandó országos gyűlésre.75 A debreceni honvédegylet működése 1912-ben megszűnt, s így a tagság elfogyott. Az 1913. augusztus 3-án megjelent „Debrecen” c. újság írta, hogy az augusztus 2-áról való megemlékezésre már csak négy öreg honvéd maradt életben. Báthori Gábor tizedes, Nánási Mihály huszár, Horváth Gábor gyalogos vitéz és Nagy József főágyúmester, mind a négyen már 80 éven túl voltak. Báthori Gábor mondott emlékbeszédet. Az ünnepség után Debrecen városa a Lokodi féle vendéglőben vacsorát adott a nagy idők nagy öregjei részére.76

History of the Debrecen Branch of the Veterans of the War of

Independence

As everywhere in Hungary, the Veteran’s Society was founded in Debrecen, too, first in 1867. The first chairman was István Pataki, colonel in 1848/49. In the beginning the society vas active in supporting the widows and orphans of the fallen soldiers of the War of Independence. From the period 1867-1892 we have very few documents at our disposal concerning the operation of the Society. It was re-founded in 1892, with Dr Pál Hegedűs, veteran officer, as chairman. The objective was to promote and maintain the moral recognition of the soldiers of the War of Independence by the Hungarian society. That also meant supporting the aged, poor or disabled comrades, mediation and support for the justified applications for state pensions, collection of funds for the Society with the citizens’ contribution, the care of the soldiers’ tombs and the war memorials, cooperation in the memorial celebrations. They participated in the life of the national Veterans’ Society, too. In the course of the years, however, the members of the Society became older and older, due to the deaths their numbers declined, there was no replacement from the younger generations, so the Society ceased to exist in 1912.
