History of the National Guards in Debrecen István Gazdag The institution of National Guards played an important part in the history of the Hungarian War of Independence. Its duty, as expressed by the Prime Minister on 22th March, 1848 was primarily maintenance of public order and security of property. The political and military leadership, because of the threatening attack of the army of Jellasits was forced to send the scantily equipped, poorly trained and undisciplined national guards to the battlefield. Despite fulfilling their operational tasks honestly, the guardsmen committed serious errors, this is why the public and also the political leadership decided to re-organize the institution. On 19th March 1948 the Municipal Assembly in Debrecen adopted a decision of establishing the Local National Guard. The entrants were mainly college students, the population of the city first refrained themselves from joining, later, after the attack of Jellasits’s army the number of applicants increased. In Debrecen there were 3,300 guardsmen in service, 12 infantry and 2 cavalry companies were established. The Debrecen guardsmen fought in the southern parts of the country, in Transylvania and in the area of Tiszafüred. In July 1849, in the wake of the forthcoming Russian invasion the units of the Debrecen National Guards started to dissolve.
