ISTVÁN SZÉCHENYI AND BIHAR COUNTY IN THE HUNGARIAN REFORM ERA Miklós Bényei At the beginning of the Reform Era the relationship between Count István Széchenyi and Bihar County (where he spent the last years of his military service) was confined to a small number of personal meetings. At the end of the year 1835 the County Assembly passed a decision to have Széchenyit portrait painted. The task was given, on Széchenyit recommendation, to a young Szekler artist, Miklós Barabás, the fee was paid from the contributions of the noblemen and the nobles' communities. In December of the same year the Noblemen’s National Club elected Széchenyi its honorary member, who accepted the membership in a friendly letter. As Chairman of the Transport and Communications Committee of the Governor General's Council, in autumn 1845 he sent a written document to Bihar County Assembly on matters of watercourse regulation. Then, on October 5th — after 22 years' absence -- he set foot on the soil of the County, however, he visited only Debrecen.
