peal to the bench of the captain-general of Kassa and from 1704 to the district general assembly that was the common public administrative organization of the Haidu towns. The power of life and death was withdrawn and granted to the Haidu district by Marie Theresa in 1757. Thus the judgement of the serious criminal acts got to the original jurisdiction of the district law- court and the town councils could start legal proceedings only in criminal acts of smaller importance. Since the theoretical separation of the more and less serious cases didn't take place, debate broke out fre­quently between the town councils and the district lawcourt in the question of the power of authority. From 1757 the meetings of general assembly of Haidu district on which trials of criminal acts were held were called "Criminal Law- court of Haidu district" and thus the appeals against the judgements of the town councils were sent up addressed to the penal lawcourt. From 1757 to 1850 that was the end of the feudal era appeals against the judgements of the town councils for or against altogether 259 defendants were introduced to the lawcourt. According to the tri­als held on the lawcourt the judgement of the court of first instance was affirmed in cases of 111 defendants, the penalty was increased in 47 cases and reduced in 15 cases and 26 people convicted by the court of first instance were acquitted of the charge. The judgements of the court of first instance were quashed because of groundlessness and new proceedings were ordered or additional evidences were consid­ered necessary in cases of 48 defendants while the proceedings were stayed or stopped against 12 defendants. 30 A haj dúkerületi büntető törvényszék,...
