160 A Hajdúnánási Ipartestület története ség életének és munkásságának a végére, amely pár év hiányában fél évszázadig tartott. The Trade Guilds that were serving the handworkers and organized the life of the craftsmen for centuries became obsolete to the end of the nineteenth century. So for the sake of making things better a need for a change presented itself. And it was done. In 1884 competent persons of our country introduced a new law about the foundation of an association serving more faithfully the interests of the craftsmen. The law permitted enough time for the execution and the Trade-Association was formed in Hajdúnánás just in 1903. The attitudes of the craftsmen weren't uniform. 160 craftsmen voted for the matter and 63 voted against it. It is understandable. Nevertheless the will of the majority was decisive! The work of organization was carried out by the most respected officers of our town and they helped to take the first steps as well. The collective elected such leaders from their members who proved their suitability by their irreproachableness and by their excellent professional knowledge. During their activity they had to arrange different things but they took care of nothing to do with politics. We know their work from the minutes recorded in the course of time. A selection of this gives a true picture of our world. The problem of apprentices, disagreements between craftsmen, presidential election, things of economy, wars and their consequences, the disgusting industrial politics of the years following the second world war and the end in 1949 are mentioned in it. Nevertheless there are also references to the facts that choral union of this community was famous all over the country and their dramatic society deserved credit. In the society of Craftsmen everybody could find the suitable possibility of amusement and the books, papers helping education. They bought a radio even at that time when it was very rare in Nánás. •History of the -trade-association of Hajdúnánás
