consciousness. On the other hand amongst the news collected by the inside consultants there were news about Debrecen as well moreover they added also comments to some of such news. Albert Pákh was speaking ironically about the backwardness of the town sometimes expressing false accusations as well. In addition different advertisements, official proclamations and every now and then book- reviews also appeared henceforward. The longer dissertation-like or educational writings of authors of Debrecen dissapeared; the debate between the leaders of the town and the journal entirely ceased, only very few articles and even less news appeared about the activity of the magistracy. The events of the Calvinist church district of "Tiszántúl" and of the Calvinist College and the events of the cultural life came into the limelight but the reports and news published about such themes were not regular. More than the average though fairly accidentally was written about the activity of the authors of Debrecen, about the impossible conditions of the local traffic, about the necessity of the railway and about the saving-banks that were evaluated as the sings of development of bourgeois mentality. Although there were attempts at change of the situation, the relationship between the journal and the town remained in the state of mutually non-committal attitude almost all the time during the three and a half years investigated. Neverthelles a great part of information cannot be found in other places so the articles of "Pesti Hírlap" can be regarded as important sources of the local history. 75
