DATA УОК THE MUSICAL LIFE OF DEBRECEN IN THE AGE OF ABSOLUTISM (1849—1867) László Zoltán Major In the program of centralizing absolutism besides the economical development certain cultural arrangements were also included. Cultural, artisical results appe­ared also in the spiritual life of the town. In Debrecen, besides the military bands and gipsy bands a significant result was the establishment of School of Music in 1861. Over and above the beinning of research of music, concerts also were orga­nized very often in the town. Of course singing of the calvinist congregation was a major part of the character of the town too. It is also mentioned in the study in a certain historical point of view as well. The cultural aspect of the town was significantly enriched also by the musical activity of the theatre and by the choirs, singing circles and choral societies. The study deals also with the choral societies founded after the Choir of the burgeouis age. 98
