POLGÁRESKÜ Én ........esküszöm az Élő Istenre, ki Atya, Fiú, Szent Lélek, tellyes Szent Háromság; hogy ebben a Concivisi állapotomban, mellyre most felvevőd- tem Nemes Debrecen Városának Főbírájától, Tanácsától, és több rendes Elöljáróitól függök, hozzájuk illendő becsülettel és tartozó engedelmességgel viseltetem. A Nemes Városnak Privilégiumai, Szabadsági és jó rendtartásai ellen, sem titkon, sem nyilván, nem igyekezem, nem cselekszem; sőt ha valami ollyat értek, a mi a Bírónak, Tanácsnak, és a Város szabadságának és jó rendtartásának sértődésére, ártalmára, kárára szolgálna Elöljáróimnak azonnal tudtokra adom. A Nemes Város Szabadságával, sem utazásomban, Révéken, Vámokon, Harmincadokon, sem akár- melly társasági alkalmatossággal vissza nem élek. Concivisi Passusomat senkivel nem közlöm, sem pedig együt való köz kereskedéssel senkit nem éltetek, akár külső ember légyen, akár itt lakos ha nem Concivis. Semmi szolgálatot és közönséges terheket kerülő embert, annyival inkább gonosztevőt mellettem, alattam nem tartok s nem lappongtatok, sőt ha valahol, vagy a városban, vagy annak határán ollyat hallok, vagy tapasztalok, halasztás nélkül hírré teszem. Házamban, magam cselédjein kívül semmi idegen embert, ha szintén Passusa volna is, lakónak hír nélkül bé nem fogadok;idegen esmeretlen embernek pedig, ha Passusa nincsen még csak szállást sem adok: sőt ha Hlyen jönne hozzám, felőle azonnal hírt teszek. Ha ezen Concivis állapotból kiállni, vagy a Városból költözni akarok, azt is Elöljáróimnak értésekre adom Isten engem úgy segéjen. A debreceni polgár jogait és kötelességeit tartalmazó polgáreskű a XVIII. század elején keletkezett. HONORARY FREEMEN OF DEBRECEN István Gazdag An honorary freeman is a person who is presented with the freedom by a city or a village as a mark of esteem and gratitude. The title of freeman could be presented by the city of Debrecen according to the initiation of the leaders, the leading communities or associtons of the city or to the launching of a national authority. The first four honorary freemen were elected in 1835. Awarding the title of freeman is not just a ceremonial act when the granter and the honoured assure each other about their mutual appreciation. It is more than this, it’s a cross-section of a given period of the history of the town. The awardings of the title were realized in eight well separable periods in Debrecen: in the reform period during the war of independence, in the years of absolutism, in the year of restoration of constitutionalism, in the years of the dual monarchy, between the two world wars, in the years of the state party and after the change of regime. Honoured freemen of Debrecen are listed in the appendix. From the) 31Bt of January 1835 to the 28th of November 1992 altogether 111 people were presented with the honorific title. In addition I publish the wording of civilian oath containing the rights and liabilites of a burgess of Debrecen. 69
