HIDING INSURGENTS IN DEBRECEN Gábor ölveti In this study the author surveys the changes in the relationship between Hungarians insurging against Habsburg oppression and the town of Debrecen making considerable sacrifices to provide for them in the period from 1670 to 1678. At the beginning, this relationship was filled with deep national and religious compassion and can definitely described as positive. But after the unsuccessful military operations in summer of the year 1675, a gradual disaffection ensued between the town and the insurgent troops, which was a direct consequence of the decline of the movement’s impact, the hardly tolerable demands of the military and harrassment, by German imperial troops retaliating against the town which had given help to hiding insurgents. These factors were substantially contributed by the indifference of Turkish and TRANSYLVANIAN authorities as far as the heavy burdens and weak defences of the town were concerned. After 1678, at the time of the Kuruts insurrection led by count Imre Thököly this relationship turns into hostility, which fact is deeply rooted in the historical events of the „hiding” period treated in this study. 152
